What parallel routing means
In a parallel delay and reverb setup, the dry signal splits into two independent effect paths. One path feeds the delay and the other feeds the reverb. Their outputs are combined afterward.

The delay never passes through the reverb, and the reverb never passes through the delay. That independence is the defining difference from serial routing.
Use parallel routing when you want to hear the timing of the delay and the shape of the reverb as two clear, separately voiced layers.
Why parallel effects often sound clearer
Serial routing compounds processing: one effect reshapes the output of the other. That interaction is useful, but it can blur transients or build density. Parallel routing avoids the extra processing stage and makes each effect easier to identify and balance.
It also lets contrasting choices coexist. A darker ping-pong delay can move across a wide stereo image while a shorter, brighter reverb supplies early depth. Because neither effect changes the other, adjusting feedback does not unexpectedly lengthen the apparent reverb tail.
Parallel versus serial routing
Choose Parallel for separation, predictable control, and a clean combination of rhythm plus space. Choose Delay → Reverb when the repeats should inhabit one room. Choose Reverb → Delay when the room itself should repeat.
A helpful test is to lower both sends, then raise the delay until its rhythm works. Add reverb only until the dry sound gains the required depth. This prevents the combined wet level from becoming the reason the parallel route seems impressive.
Practical starting points
Lead vocal
Try a tempo-synced delay with moderate feedback and a medium reverb with some pre-delay. Duck the combined wet field so consonants stay clear, then let both effects rise between phrases.
Snare or percussion
Use a short room for body and a filtered delay for groove. Independent paths keep the delay taps from being smeared by the room.
Synth or guitar
Let a stereo or ping-pong delay provide width while a darker reverb sits behind it. Parallel routing makes it easier to keep the modulation from becoming one undifferentiated wash.
Common mistakes
- Too much total wet level: two modest sends can still add up to a large output.
- Similar timing everywhere: matching delay time, pre-delay, and decay too closely can make independent paths feel crowded.
- No frequency contrast: darkening one path can leave space for the other and for the dry source.
- Judging louder as better: compare against a matched dry reference before committing.
